We first encountered this car at the 2000 Classic, at the post Berg Cruise party at Knolwoods. Needless to say, we were immediately drawn to it due to the efforts with which its owner, Scott Bakken, had undertaken to replicate the famous '75 Hot VWs Cal Look issue Aronson/Holmes '63 cover car. Scott is no stranger to the Cal Look scene, being a member of DVB back in the '70's. While Scott also owns a beautiful red '67 with Flat Four BRMs, also built in the traditional Cal Look style, his goal with this car was to build an authentic replica of the most famous Cal Looker ever built.
Starting with a '63 sunroof, Scott painted the car in appliance white, adding an EMPI rear seat, stereo in the glove box, fiberglass front seats, a Lacara steering wheel, Hurst shifter, and a full gauge package housed in a black Lexan dash insert. Scott also added a set of Flat Four BRMs with 145/165 tires, a Sway Away adjustable front end, aluminum T bars, a fiberglass decklid with integrated scoop, and Lucas turn signal indicators in the front fenders.
Many people who saw the car at the '2000 Classic thought that it was the genuine thing, being magically found and brought back to life. Dean Kirsten, who also had his car in the famous Feb. '75 issue, was so impressed with the efforts put into this car to replicate the original that he gave Scott some original Becker's decals. Ron Fleming, Greg Aronson, and Mark Thurber were also seen admiring the car. A true testament to the result of Scott's efforts!
