We arrived at 8AM and there were many Drag cars in the tech line. Stopped there to greet fellow CLFers : Misbehaven Jerry SPEARN,
the PALMERS, John PLOW, Richard ROTH... Then around 9AM, they
started running the Drags. There were many Clubs cars on display, a great
Swap Meet, even saw a set of Hemi VW Heads by Aero, remember those ? For sale
for 600$ Nice door stops, LOL.
I saw many awesome wheelstands throughought the day, sadly the old Deano / Mark RIELLY Turbo Drag Super Bug flipped in the finish line, spun on it's top, looking at the photos it looks like crosswind caused it to flip hitting the crash wall back end first in a massive ball of fire, engine flew out of the car, amazingly the front end is unhurt but big damage in the rear & top, driver injured and off to the hospital, that was the only negative thing of the day. There were 2500 spectators and 180 cars according to John PLOW of the CLF. The Irwindale director Dough STOKES introduced himself and seems to be a great guy and perhaps if we are lucky this event will continue well into the future, KIMBALL and the various sponsors are all to be commended for putting on a Return of the Drag Days that we all so enjoyed years ago. The spectators more than got their money's worth, amazingly the 5$ entry fee gave you total acess, Announcer Dyno Don was awesome just like the Old days ! Many of the the old Timers were in attendance, this location is the perfect place to continue with this 3/4 times a year, sure there are other events but the hard core want to see the return of the VW Drag Racing. Dyno Don, close your eyes, listen, and think back 25 years, man it all comes back with the return of this event ! Kind regards, Glenn Miller - Trackside Photo
